Well i got up this morn warmed the car up for about 20 mins since its cold in IL..i took off to take my bf to work about a 15 min drive and the temp was way below the middle mark well about half way to his work it sky rocketed like it was going to over heat so i turned the defrost on and it went back down so after i dropped him off i drove home with the heater completley off and it just stayed on the cool mark do you think my thermo is going out?usually when i take him to work with the heater on it just stays in the cool area so i really dont know what the deal is im no mechanic!!plz help!!thanks

It could have been caused by a loose or wet fan belt ~~

It sounds like your coolant is low and there's air trapped in the system which is causing the temperature gauge to read erratically as you describe. If you have a radiator cap on top of your radiator as well as an overflow reservoir bottle, you need to remove the radiator cap when the engine's cold and fill the radiator completely with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and antifreeze that you can buy at the auto parts store. Then fill the reservoir to the cold fill mark. Check your fluids often. Sometimes the air has to be bled from the cooling system if the problem continues after topping off the coolant.

It could well be the thermostat,check your water level in the rad and that the electric fans are working as well

Yes its very possible. It sounds like its sticking open and closed. Luckily its a fairly easy and cheap fix on most cars.

you could have a sticky t-stat ...doubt it though
let you enging cool and check your water level in the radiator
sounds like a small water leak somewhere...

Check you radiator fluid .One see if it needs to be changed or has a leek in it. Good luck.

hhahah ,, classic sympton....uve got no hot air bcos ur radioator is almost dry, try filling it up....thats the reason why it overheats as well.......
