Deception. The book of Revelation in the Bible is full of Satan's deception in the last days. And we are leading to that very time so people nowadays are already beginning to be aware in this but the worse is yet to come when the man of sin will declare himself to be god.

I partially agree with the previous answerer (nubian_qween03) re. freewill.... however, I believe that it is not due to freewill as such, it is rather the arrogant ego arising from the freewill experience, which coupled with his power of intelligence makes him dangerously unwise and evil as well.
