Sprint offers an "international band" blackberry phone that would work in Japan.

Its the Blackberry 8830. It is CDMA/GSM enabled, and is unlocked on the GSM network.

These phones are mostly ordered directly from Sprint. You may be able to find one in a busy corporate retail store, but smaller retailers and Radio Shacks probably won't have them.
