Hundred of tons are left on Everest every year. I would have thought it would be easier carring empty food cans down rather than full ones up.Same applies to all who dump their garbage everywhere.

It's pretty bad on Everest, however each year for the past couple of years there have been teams of climbers cleaning up the garbage at altitudes up to and including the death zone.

A lot of the garbage problem on Mt Everest is due to the sheer number of climbers on the mountain each season.

The reason climbers on Mt Everest (and K2 and a few other peaks) don't bring their garbage down is pretty straight forward, a lack of energy. The final assault on the summit is only about a 1000m (3,300 feet) climb but normally takes 10-12 hours, plus it's now so crowded that climbers literally queue for hours trying to climb over the Hillary Step. The delays are so long that climbers no longer have either the time or energy to carry down their empty oxygen bottles, ropes and so on.

Most climbers agree that the garbage issue is bad, but so is having to step over the "deads" (corpses of dead climbers) on the way up and down the mountain.

It is disgusting and these hikers/climbers should have to pay a fee because of it. It should affect all hikers/climbers. I guarantee that most of them (if not all) are rich people that feel they are too good to clean up after themselves.
You are preaching to the choir here. My neighborhood is disgusting and I have thought about organizing a clean up or just doing it myself but it would just come back. I live in a nice neighborhood. It appears that people cut through and throw their garbage out. There are a lot of trees and each house has at least an acre of land. I yell at my stepkids when they toss their garbage. They just look at me. I make them pick it up. They argue. Their dad does too but he doesn't always see it. What's worse is when people throw out their cigarettes out the car window. That makes me very angry. I see it all of the time, unfortunately. It is hard to enforce. But we should be able to do something. I know in North Carolina, you can report people and the state will send a letter to the perpetrator. It seems better than nothing I suppose. If you are driving solo, it's kind of hard to write down the plate number.

When I was growing up we were raised to pick up not only our own rubbish, but anyone else's that was around and in the vicinity of where we were walking, camping etc. It is disgusting and a sad sign of the times, the lack of respect for everything and everybody. My children follow what I do when out and about, I'm proud to say.

You are so right.
These sort of people should have no business being in such pristine places.
