Now a days it seems that churches, ymca's, public places are holding functions for kids and charge them for admission.
What happened to the good ole days of going house to house?
I think this holiday has fizzeled out.
What is the age of a child that they should stop dressing up in costumes?
Oh yeah, with that said, don't you hate when the older kids don't even dress up, and just wear torn clothes or just go as they are???

People still trick-or-treat. If there isn't a church or other community building giving a celebration, then the neighborhood watch is setting rules for trick-or-treaters.
In my neighborhood, no one is allowed to start before 6pm, to allow people to get home. At 9pm it stops completely.

I personally don't feel that we should put an age limit on trick-or-treating, because most children these days are the size of adults. It's difficult to even tell the children from the adults. Also, I find that the adults have just as much fun with this tradition as the kids. If families went together more often, then maybe society could bring back the good old days. Besides, if you think the holiday is fizzelling out, then maybe we should promote more traditions like trick-or-treating.

On another answer given to you a lady made mention of razor blades, and poison in candy. This is false that people have done this randomly. Usually if something like this happens to candy on Halloween, someone has been targeted. Although reporters over dramatized the events, giving the impression that more people were hurt, it has been documented that the candy with the blades or poison where from family members intending to hurt someone specific. None-the-less, parents should always check the candy their kids bring home.

Some kids who go as they are, most likely come from homes where the parents refused, or couldn't afford a costume. In my neighborhood we have some kids who do this. They go to school with my son. I know for a fact that their parents could care less if they have clothes for school, let alone a Halloween costume.

I do wish more people opened their doors on Halloween. Fear, religion, and humanities lack of tradition is really putting a damper on what used to be a wonderous night of homemade haunted houses, graveyards, and homeowners jumping out to scare you as you tottled to the door.

I want the good old days too. This Halloween I will be opening my door, and I will scare the Bleep out of those kids, no matter what age!!!!!!

Happy Hauntings.

There are many neighbors throughout the USA that still host Trick or Treat.
We go trick/treating every year.
I did with my children and then grandchidren . This will be the first year in ages that I don't.

I will agree with you that many folks don't bother with it and I think it's because of one of the following reasons:

1. Their "stick in the muds"
2. Afraid of being attacked ( high crime rate at Halloween)
3. Too cheap to buy the candy.

Age Appropriate?? Is there such a thing? Most kids stop going Trick or Treating by the age of 14 and yes I wish the older kds would dress up . I also see that in younger kids too.

Me.. whether I'm out pounding the streets or giving candy at home I ALWAYS dress for Halloween...It's my favorite holiday! 50+ grandma --Happy Haloween!!!

I think you're right. Halloween is going the way of New Kids on the Block. Most people I overhear talk about how ridiculous it was that we used to tell our kids to never take candy from strangers, but then once a year we send them out by themselves to canvas the neighborhood and do exactly the opposite of what we taught them. What a stupid holiday. Kind of a waste of good money, too. I'm taking my $200 and buying my kids a few new outfits. Now that's money well spent, and they're way more excited about that than some candy they can get anytime they want. From someone I trust, me!

Well in my point as a caring person (please don't think I'm saying that you aren't) it's the best way for parents to take their little ones trick or treating as there is still a fear of people putting razor blades, needles, or worse in candy nowadays outside of taking your children to the houses of people you know in your own neighborhood (like my parents did before that kind of thing was spread all over the news). If I were a parent I would do that and take my children to the houses of only the people I knew to make sure that they were given safe candy.
