Marx said that division of labor, exploitation and surplus value creates a situation when man is alienated from his true self. He has to identify with his profession or vocation and forget about what he really wants. This creates intense conflict in his mind. Is n't his the reason for many psychopathic (not nuerological) conditions today? We've rarely heard about depression and anxiety in the writings from the pre-capitalistic world.

What do you think?

You can't compare today with even a hundred years ago. People were used to blood and death. They killed animals and watched each other die. There was more disease and conditions that couldn't be cured. We are more likely to be affected by the sight of blood or death than they were. I've noticed in old pictures that people didn't smile and some look very unhappy.

Life is becoming more complex and sophisticated and there's no going back to 'carefree peasantry' as an alternative. The incidence of mental illness increases with life's pressures.
