Why is it that a starting pitcher needs to finish the 5th inning with the lead at least to get a win for himself? In a way that's not fair because a reliever can come into a tie ballgame, get one out, and get the win if his team takes the lead immediately after.

I was just curious.

the game needs to be five innings to be official first of all. also the relievers did not start the game, so they can get a win. also, your team has to take the lead in the same inning.

like, say a relief pitcher comes in the first 1/2 of the inning, and they are behind, then their teams comes up in the same inning and takes the lead, it counts cause its the same inning.

if the starter comes out during a tie game, or they didnt pitch over 5 innings, they get a "no decision" rhw starter must pitch 5 inning or more to get a loss or a win.

The team has to be losing when the reliever comes in. Otherwise its a draw for the starting picther. But the offense depends a lot on the pitcher not to score runs. So if for example Curt Schilling is pitching against Randy Johnson and the score is 4-5. So Tim Wakefield comes in and allows no runs for 2 innings, and the team scores 3 runs. Final Score Red Sox 7 Yankees 5- Well Wakefield got the win- his team took the lead while he was pitching. But you can have no descion games, due to ties.

That is still a good question, really I don't know how it got started, but after 5 innings of a baseball game, it becomes offical, and it can't be made up, no matter what happens the rest of the way. They can only qualify for the win, but it doesn't mean that they will get it.
