Is your motherboard an AGP motherboard or a PCI Express motherboard?

That will tell you what type of card you need to buy (you can't fit an AGP card into a PCI Express slot or a PCI Express card into an AGP slot), then there's the issue of power consumption and heat dissipation which will limit your choice of card (though you'd have to pay a lot of money for that to matter).

your motherboard only support 8x agp based graphics card. and it is not the ideal platform to upgrade from. Actually it is no longer worth spending more on your current config. But if you dont want to build a new pc then get hold of an agp card like XFX GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card @$129 approx or a cheaper 6800gt. but it is not really worth it according to me.

The ideal way is to build a new pc. with a core 2 duo, 2gb ddr800 ram, 8800gts or 8600gt (dx10), etc

The one important factor you didn't mention is the output of your power supply. High end graphics cards normally require more power output (350W-400w) than the standard PS in stock PCs (200W-300W). Your PC's power output, if unchanged, will limit your choices.

just go to any retailer... show them your config & tell them your budget.. get the best of it... the price tags varies all over India.. & more over AGP compatible graphics cards are costlier than PCIx compatible.. there are many motherboard specs to take care off.. Don't be worried..
