I've bought lots of guppies from petsmart and most of them died!! If you're getting females petsmart doesn't have pretty ones mostly just silver..
Try to buy the most active fish in the tank. One way to tell if they have good fish is to watch how they handle them.. do they just dump them into the bags without thinking? Or do they do it gently? this is a way to tell if they care about the fish. Also look if the tank is clean or if there are dead ones everywhere, this is also a sign.. To identify sick fish...
1. Don't get one that stays on the top
2. Look for white spots or gross stuff growing on them (this could be ich or other diseases)
3. See if they have eyes that stick out with purple around them (popeye)
4. make sure they don't have shredded looking fins or tails (fin and tale rot)
5. Do they appear to be trying to swim really fast but stay in one place? (this could be shimmy)

I was surprised that the Wal-mart near me actually had really good guppies! They are pretty and hardy...Yours might be different but you might want to check there..
One thing about guppies is that if you get females they'll have tons of babies! My tank is overcrowded I would suggest getting only males if you don't want to raise a whole bunch of fry.
Good luck!!=D

Petco and Petsmart have the best prices, but if you can find a local fish store that's not a big chain they usually have the best fish. What I did was buy my tank and my setup at Petco and all of my fish from a local dealer. This way I got the best price on a tank, filter, heater, rocks, and furniture for my tank. By getting the fish from a local store I feel like the fish were healthier and the sales staff new more about fish than a Petco would. Sometimes you get really good people at Petco, but they usually don't have someone watching over their fish as much as a local fish store would.

In my area (Denver) I like the Petsmarts better. They are cheaper then the Petcos and their fish look much healthier .

I think the best thing would be to take a field trip to both of these stores. They're both overpriced so you might as well get a look at the inventory and make your decision based on the fishy fish.

My community puppy shop stills sells domestic canines yet I surely have asked them the place they get their domestic canines from simply by fact i wanted to be conscious of. I had approximately an hour long communicate with the owner who mentioned that they purchase from a breeder yet that their breeder became registered with all of the mandatory institutions with regards to breeding canines, they have their own vet it is supplied in as quickly as a week and that they are in many cases inspected (at random) by utilising the suitable government. the owner additionally mentioned that at any time a member from the regularly occurring public that became questioning of paying for for a domestic dog became welcome to flow to the breeder so as that they might see first hand what the placement became like and how the domestic canines have been raised. I too am against paying for domestic canines from puppy shops simply by fact maximum of them in all risk don't have such stringent controls for the breeder yet as you will discover, no longer all puppy shops are irresponsible. Seven years in the past i offered my canine from a puppy shop (being non the wiser approximately domestic dog generators on the time) or perhaps in spite of the undeniable fact that i admire my canine dearly, from a well-being attitude, she is a reject and in certainty ought to never have been born. from time to time i ask your self how her clutter friends are doing now and in the event that all of them have a similar issues as my toddler. I in basic terms desire they have loving and worrying owners who will seem after them, in spite of the quick falls. I completely help outlawing domestic dog generators and outdoors breeders yet I additionally help breeders who're doing the right component so as that we are able to have chuffed and healthful canines.
