If so, how do you like it? Is it much different than North America? Can you buy what you need, or are a lot of things not available? Can you live freely?

Never been and will never go until Cuba is a free country. Every dollar you leave in Cuba goes to Fidel's private account in Spain, the people in Cuba are not free, have very little to eat and never see any dollar from the tourists unless these give them the money personally. I cannot go to live or vacation in a place where I, as a tourist, will eat and have fun in my hotel or resort while the people are starving outside my private world.

Hi, first thing a foreigner is called a Yuma in Cuba ,not a Gringo. Living in Cuba is much different than living in the USA. There are two money systems peso convertible for foreigners
and peso nacional for Cubans the ratio is 1 to 24. Don't expect abundant food supplies, in general the quality and quantity is less than what we get used to in the Western world.
You have only two possibilities for your stay: living in a hotel or rent a casa particular , this is a room in a private house with an offical licence. With money you can do a lot more than the average Cuban, but there are frequently shortages of basic things such as toilet paper, toothbrushes, soap etc.
