No not rude, you can ask but how do you know the answer is truthful or not.
Trolls delight in multiple personalities and many are not the same gender as they really are.
As you say you cant tell by the avatar!!!

I don't think it's rude. You can't tell by some of the avatars. You wouldn't want to call them by the wrong gender.

I wouldn't say so because its not hard for ppl to make a avatar that is easily said to be male or female.. just ask! they get mad well maybe they should have made a clearer avatar for themself.

Maybe the avatar was picked so you wouldn't know but I see nothing wrong with asking. It isn't like you can actually see the person and are insulting him/her/trany

is it rude to ask without first volunteering the information yourself? (maybe so)
an avatar can be misleading, as can verbal "yes" or "no" or gender reporting.
maybe if it ever got to the point of "mattering", the info would be vlounteered without asking

i think somoen already asked this question, but it also depends on the name under the picture too, that you can tell if its a guy or a girl. but other wse i dont guess it would matter to ask.
