I really want a dvr but I am not willing to pay a monthly service fee for it on top of my already expensive cable bill. My question is, are there any brands of dvr where you don't have to pay a monthy fee? You know, just like an old school vcr only way better. Links are greatly appreciated.

The choices in the US are somewhat limited.

There is the Philips DVDR3575H 160G HDD DVD Recorder w/ ATSC tuner (although Walmart seems to be clearing these out) and the new Magnavox H2080MW8 that Walmart is stocking.

There is also a Poloroid unit but the user reviews on it aren't very good.

These have both analog and digital tuners but only record in SD (480).

You might find some older models on clearance but these only have analog tuners. These will be of limited use after analog OTA TV broadcasts end on 2/17/09.

If you are using a cable box, this might not matter to you.

To record in HD, you either have to use a payed service or use a PC (either Media Center PC or build you own DVR out of a computer).
