I bought one from ebay.... (ebay search*: ceramic car heater)

Can't include linky cause Y/A doesn't seem to post up qus with links in it anymore.

The reason for getting one was to get the car warmed up and help defrost windows for the first 10 minutes of driving, before the engine proper gets warmed up for car's own heating system to takeover. (then unplugging the ceramic heater unit)

However plugging it in for first time.. it doesn't seem to produce much heat unless your hand is close up to it (6 inches), and at a distance it feels cool air.

Even if it's cool at a distance... hot air rises I suppose so do you think they work for the job in Winter - or are they just a con?

If you have one can you tell me whether you find it useful?

About all they're good for is slowly and eventually defrosting your windshield. They only put put around 150 watts or 500 BTUs. A regular car heater puts out around 60,000 BTU's, more than the heating systems of some houses.

You can instantly defrost the windshield by spraying with starter fluid. Wouldn't recommend it on the inside, might put you to sleep and not too healthy. It won't crack your windshield as would the application of heat though.

What we used to do some years ago, was to put a trouble light next to the engine block with a 100W bulb in it, then lay an old army blanket over the engine and close the hood as far as we could.

Then in the morning we unplugged the light and started the engine, the engine would warm up right away and the heater would start putting out heat. The battery was also warmed by the light and the car started right up.

I bet the same thing would still work today. good luck.

Forget about the heater.

I think your car heater will warm up your car long before that ceramic heater does any good.
