I drive 2000 Chevy Impala, which has several minor problems. I want to take it to a Chevy dealer for a check-up and fix somewhat major problems only. The thing is the car is only worth a few grand, so I don't want to end up spending more than the value of the car to fix it. After all, I'm only going to drive it for a few more years.
How can I avoid unnecessary repairs and reduce repair cost?

Well first of all How many miles are on it . Also what some of the major problems are you having with it.
There are other options you can take to repair your car. Dealers are incredulously expensive when it come to repairs. And they are not about taking care of the customer.
Do you know of any auto repair shops around you that are reputable, if so Talk to the person in charge ask what type of cars they specialize in. Or what certification there Techs Have. You looking for someone who has a back ground In later GM cars and more than just 7 years of exsperiance.

Buy yourself an older Mercedes-Benz. Nothing will go wrong with it, if it has been fully serviced up till now. These cars just keep going. Your F**d has not even reached the 10 year lifespan I believe they have. I have a 21 year old Mercedes with 140,000 miles on it, in immaculate condition, and EVERYTHING works perfectly. It has about ten more years in it, easily! I see these on eBay here in the UK with over 300,000 miles on them, still selling well.

I have actually went through this same thing before. I would recommend finding an exact estimate of how much your car is worth. www.autotrader.com can help with this I believe. Then figure out how much it would cost to fix each part.
I ended up just buying a new vehicle because to fix it would have been more costly than just buying a new vehicle.

I took mine to the dealer to diagnose, then called around different places and was able to get the repairs at 1/2 the price that was quoted to me. Try that.

Stay away from car dealerships, they cost the most and often send them to others for the work. I would go with a tire dealer type service. If available, I also always liked Pep Boys.
