Can you set an alarm to wake you up at a certain amount of time so that you never reach the REM stage? It is the only way that I can deal with the dreams I have, not really nightmares, just being with people in ,my past that I am not supposed to think of when I'm awake. Sometimes they are more real to me than reality because it feels like I spend more time interacting with them than the people I know now...anmd it is affecting me in several negative ways, but I can't seem to just "forget" the dreams or "shake them off"

Your subconscious is trying to make you deal with them once and for all. The only healthy way for you to stop the dreams is to deal with them. Often times our subconscious is smarter than our waking states. It knows what we need to grow and move on to the next level in our path. These people or dreams are a stumbling block to your growth. You must take control of the dreams and either banish these people, deal with them head on or destroy them. You are strong enough to do this. Kick 'em in the a$$ hon....it's the only way......I had to do this when I was dreaming about my beating when I was 15. For 20 some years they would be beating me over and over again in my dreams. It was awful until I became what I was always meant to be....a witch..... then I took control. It was so freeing. You can do that too. Take control sister....

I suppose you could continue on this course of thinking although it'll really screw you up in ways you cannot imagine.
We dream for a reason. It's the mind's way of dealing with reality when your conscious mind is in rest state.
Best way to deal with things you're talking about is to nurture yourself so you can sleep well and get proper rest.

Because you can't stop what is the natural way the body works withoug significant damage to yourself.

The other thing here is that the more you tell yourself to stop something, the more you will be plagued with whatever it is you're trying to stop.
Try relaxing and cooperating instead. You're trying too hard.

The dead giveaway is your own statement "I'm not supposed to think of when I'm awake". That's a setup for failure right off the bat. You're trying to take over control of your unconscious dream life and it's not possible in the first place. Secondly, you need to quit fighting and just let the thoughts and dreams come through.
Your mind is trying to help you, you have to help it by allowing it a voice not trying to shut it up. Listen. It will tell you exactly why you are dreaming and what about and your feelings about it all and THAT is what you need to start dealing with in you daytime reality. What your feelings ARE not what you want to control them into being because you're "NOT SUPPOSED TO BE" dreaming or thinking or feeling what you are. Usually when you "accept" rather than "deny" your feelings, they stop screaming at you, even in your dreams.

Once you've come to terms with what sounds like some strong hidden feelings, or fears, or desires, your dreams will then move on to other things but until then, this will all continue as it is.

The mind needs that stage of sleep, I don't understand but if denied you start to dream while you are awake. I remember parts of a study done in the 70s where men were denied REM sleep they started see reality and dreams at the same time, I think they were soldiers. I rarely remember my dream stage but when I do, strange and so real. Sometime I'll tell you one of them!!!!!

I guess , u have to forget the dream ...

I heard years ago that when waking up at certain intervals of times after ur sleep ( ranges where 30 minutes , wide range to wake up) u don't remember a penny of ur dreams and vice versa ... other time intervals can make ur dream a major memory ... !

If I could remember , I would tell u ... sorry I can't remember the time intervals ... > <

I'm not sure how one would go about "shutting out" subjects of dreams, but I'm sure its possible. I do know that REM sleep is vital, and if you were to interrupt yourself every time you entered it, you'd be doing yourself a great disservice.

Good luck!

its obvious that u cant let go off ur thoughts and thinkings...
well that the thing that is capturing u, u cant 4get them cz u are always thinking of them, and the continuous dreaming nightmares is bcz u cant let go ur past, the solution is to 4get totally wat happened to u in the past even if it was as harsh as u think but u cant spend ur whole life tied with it, so, it will keep nagging around u n in ur head until u set it free...
good luck and sweet dreams...!
