small groups are more comfortable usually because you're on a more personal level with the people there if there are less, but large groups can be more fun sometimes, in my opinion.

I prefer 4-10, but I am comfortable in a large group as well.

Our wedding is exactly the same, and we had exactly the same dilemma! Lots of family and friends, but not really wanting the expense of a huge wedding. We've also chosen to do the same thing - a BBQ with friends and family, perhaps as a bit of a combined housewarming, since we're moving a few months before the wedding. We've specifically stated that it's not a reception and that gifts are not required. So it's not like you're inviting people to the reception and not the ceremony. I sent invitations to the wedding very early, as a lot of people had to organise travel and time off work, and my sister had to organise her four small children. Huge drama. Other people who weren't invited found out about it and complained about not being invited. So I ended up having to send letters, emails, Facebook messages, you name it, to everyone we would have invited to the wedding, telling them that they were going to be invited to a BBQ - kind of like a save the date, I guess. I've had to make a rather complex Excel spreadsheet to keep track of who has been told and how, so no-one can say they didn't know! So if you think there might be grumblers in the family who think they are entitled to an invitation (even though NO-ONE should assume they're being invited anywhere, until the invitation is in their hands!) you might have to consider this as well.

I hate mobs. We're always in mobs. Why the fug do we need that many people? for once, I'd like to go to a football game with only 3 or 4 of my friends and actually watch our home team lose. We don't even have to watch. We can pretend to watch.

I just don't want a mob. Mobs usually attract more drama. Drama can suck the balls I don't have for all I care.
