.com is a GLOBAL address
.net likewise
.co.uk - United Kingdonw
.de = German
.ie = Irish
.nl = Netherlands
.gov.uk = Government web page for UK
.org is an organisation
etc.

There are acronyms for most countries, plus educational webs pages Governments - list goes on and on.
There are ideal for just knowing where ther are based - for example if you do a google search for something that you want to buy, there is not much point looking at web pages abroad - unless it is something that can be posted of course

Mark was correct - I work with German sites too much "bv" is their version of Ltd when dealing with companies - web address is .de - I have corrected it above - sorry

They are to assosicate websites with specific countries as to enforce internet guidelines for that country upon those websites. (.net is another common website extension, I believe .ie is specific to another certain country) There are over 150 internet website extensions related to specific countries, along with .com .net .org .edu .tv and the new .biz
