Okay, I'm not too young to be asking this question as I'm almost 17.
I'm about to be come sexually active and I want to know exactly how the pill works.
I'd ask a parent but I don't have a mother, and I'm not sure my father would be the best person to ask.
How old do you have to be to have patient-doctor confidentitality?

Not sure how it works in other countries, but in Aus', you don't have to have permission. You just need your medicare card number and your dad still won't find out cos they do bulk billing. It works by stopping the egg moving out of the ovaries and does some other stuff to stop it working just in case that happens. You can skip your monthlies when you're on the pill but they say you should do it all the time or it makes it harder to have kids later. Just ask your doctor. It won't stop STD's either. And I don't know about other girls, but it made me pretty emotional. And your body changes a bit too. Your boobs get a bit bigger or some girls put on a bit of weight. Nothing dramatic though. You've just gotta remember to take it. If you don't think you will, your best off getting an injection or implant instead...

No the first person is wrong! You don't have to be 18. Anything you tell the doctor has to remain confidential. You can go to a clinic, or your regular GYN is you have one, and obtain birth control and they can't tell your parents. The pill works by making the mucus around your cervix too tense for the sperm to pass through. The pill also will make your period lighter and shorter. Make sure to ask the doctor any questions you have, and also to use condoms even though you are on the bill. Gotta watch out for those pesky STDs!!!

Good Luck!

The pill releases a hormone that stops ovulation. Which lowers your chance of getting pregnant. It's not 100% though. But it's safer than nothing!

Even if you are on the pill, it's always better to use a condom anyway. Not only to increase your chance of NOT getting pregnant, but to also protect yourself from any diseases.

If you are capable of making a doctor's appointment by yourself and everything else, then your dad might not know...

You can always go to a Planned Parenthood clinic. They give free birth control pills and free condoms. And it's totally confidential. Otherwise, you usually have to be 18 before a doctor by law cannot submit information to your parents without your permission...

Good luck!!!

Talk to your doctor about it.

He won't be able to divulge anything to your father.
