Gum is not a good idea...chewing speakers are not popular and don't come across well.

Its simply nervousness, and that will actually go when you feel confident about speaking out. Make sure you know what you are going to say, so you have confidence about your topic.
I look very confident, but my hands are held tighly behind my back...and that helped lessen the nervousness.
Yes, confident speakers also get nervous...so its not something just for beginners and amateurs..
Just relax and think about the notes in your hand ,that you have prepared for when you have to speak..
Take it easy, take a deep breath and just get on with it...and you will be OK

Drink lots of water,its okay to drink during your lecture in intervals,everybody is human,you know.Eat a mint that will take your mind off the dryness.Make an effort to breath through your nose.

chew gum BEFORE you start, and have a glass of water at the lectern so you can pause and take a sip when necessary. You will see this frequently at political debates on TV--just no reporter ever pointed it out before.

Relax. Take a deep breath or two, or more. Hydrate your self by drinking more water on a regular basis. If your lips are chapped, you probably aren't drinking enough. Cut out or reduce caffeinated bevereages.

i agree with the above...chew gum.
personally, it makes it feel more casual for me so that i dont get nervous and my mouth wont get dry.
