Are Caucasian hostesses common in Japan? Are Japanese hostesses more preferred? Basically in a competition of desire, (sorry for the stereotype) if you put a leggy, big blue eyed, busty, long blonde haired American woman against a shorter, Asian brown eyed (any type of Asian shape eye), slimmer bodied, black haired Japanese woman, which would a Japanese man most likely pick as prettier, cuter or sexier (pretty, cute and sexy are all different things)? Also imagine the women have similar personalities and are the same age. This isn't a racial thing. It's just that my friend said that "gaijins" especially Caucasian-American women aren't found very attractive in Japan and Asia. Please post thoughts and/or expierence. Thanks.

But if Caucasian people aren't considered attractive, why do so many Asians try to achieve the Western look? Bigger eyes with the double eyelid, color contacts, hair day, leg extension surgery, tanning products, higher noses and bigger breasts. None of those are natural features to Japanese people yet they spend billions on plastic surgery to achieve that look. They can deny it all they want and say that they just want to be prettier. Their idea of pretty is the America blonde bombshell!

Andrea, when did England invade Japan?! Also Caucasian people don't just come from England. They come from France, Ireland, Italy, Yugoslavia and all of Europe. And you're from Hawaii so why are you even answering when you are saying absolutely nothing of value? I don't know which question you were answering but it doesn't sound like my question.

Eyelids
50% of Asians have the double eyelid. I don't read manga comics and I'm not even sure what they have to do with the situations. However the eyeshape that most Asians recieve after the surgery is Caucasian shaped as opposed to Latin or African eye shapes.
Color Contacts
I see a lot of Japanese celebrities where color contacts of green and blue a lot. Also I have a lot of Asian friends who wear color contacts and they say most of their friends and family do as well.
Hair
There are blondes and brunettes in every country. I've seen a lot of blondes in Japan. Especially in women who still follow the Ganguro look and celebrities (Gackt for example). Either way, brown is still commonly a Caucasian hair trait.
Leg Extension Surgery
It's very popular in China and I've known people from Japan who get it as well.
High Noses
Middle school grads are getting nose jobs in Japan as a graduation present.
Breast Implants
Millions of women in Japan look like Pamela Anderson.

Joriental, Leg Extension Surgery isn't widely performed in North America unless there's a medical reason. It's widely performed in Asia because Asians have smaller framed bodies and are shorter. Caucasians are bigger framed and taller. Caucasians (unless they suffer a medical condition like dwarfism) don't get leg extension surgery. Mostly it's a procedure limited only to Eastern Asians. Tanning got popular in the 90s in Japan with the Ganguro girl look. Before then, Bihaku skin was thought of as beautiful (and still is). Clothing is significantly Western style as are hair and makeup as well.

Also even a new type of breast implant (availible in Britain) was invented in Japan.

And Asian plastic surgeons have different techniques of plastic surgery just for Asians.

Read an article here for more proof that Asians get a lot of plastic surgery (even children as young as 4): http://www.time.com/time/asia/covers/1101020805/story.html

It doesn't matter whether they're trying to look pretty or not. Every feature popular in Japanese plastic surgery is a naturally Caucasian feature. And it's not like saying white people with deep tans are trying to be black because a tan white person has a very different skin tone from a black person 99% of the time. And black people have straight hair too so it's not a solely white feature. Japanese people may go into a plastic surgeon's office not thinking about anything but their looks but the most desired features in Japanese culture are predominantly Caucasian only features.

In general, I agree with Thecheapest. On the other hand it seems to me that hostess bars with Eastern European women are becoming more numerous in Tokyo. Hostess bars aren't my thing, so I don't know how well they are doing, but there must be somebody spending money there.
Andrea, please enlighten us as to when England invaded Japan? Good grief!
...
To respond to additional comments by History and Cheapest:
With the exception of leg extension (Ouch! What do they do, put them on the rack?!) I personally know of girls in Tokyo who have done all of the above. I think this sort of "radical beauty measure" may be less common in smaller cities, but if you just walk down the street in Shibuya, you can see it. I have seen both skin whitening and skin darkening.
This is getting slightly off subject.
To return to the point, I think that a white woman who has good people skills, adjusts to Japanese ways, does not insist on having her way or being the center of attention all the time, plays the flirtation game skillfully, and learns enough Japanese to carry on a meaningful conversation can do well in almost any job in Japan. I know a number of successful white women here, but I must say it is harder for them to thrive in this society than it is for white men.
I suspect the reasons that Japanese men tend to shy away from white women include (but are not necessarily limited to) their own lack of confidence in their language skills and the brashness and confrontational style of many western women. Please don't jump down my throat for saying this. I'm not criticizing white women or women who express themselves in a more forward manner. I'm just saying that it clashes with cultural norms here and therefore turns many Japanese men off.

I used to go to hostess bars when I lived in Japan, so I'm not going to say it's all such a terrible business. If all hostesses were prostitutes I would know about it and I can tell you they aren't all prostitutes. I imagine the top foreign hostesses make about 500000 yen a month, plus receive nice watches etc. as gifts. I think your chances of being able to be a hostess is about %100. Besides what goes on in the club, hostesses at a lot of places are expected to go on platonic dates-"doan" with the regulars and the club charges for their time. As Adam says, when business is slow the girls have get on the phones and do some rainmaking. I think the girls who are not popular are under a lot of pressure to produce or get out. A few years ago there was a case of a British hostess who was murdered by a wealthy customer at his seaside villa, so "high-class" provides no immunity against weirdos. That being said, It's up to you. There is a stigma attached to it, but your always just going to a gaijin anyways. I can't comment on how it would affect you in another industry in Japan as there just not that many precedents. I doubt it would be considered a good thing in any field, but again potential employers might just figure it's part of a gaijin's ecleptic background. For foreign hostesses I think one problem is they are often in Roppongi clubs, so they are on the front lines of everything unsavory in that part of town. I'm sure Ginza hostesses have it a lot easier.

If you are asking to Japanese, I'd say Japanese hostess is preferred. If you picked up 100 men in the street, 90-95 would prefer Japanese.

BTW, I think those two won't be an "apple-to-apple comparison".
Many foreign hostesses are working illegally. And their expected roles are different from Japanese hostess.
Japanese men visit those places for not only to meet cute Japanese girls but also to chat with them and spend fun time. However, most foreign hostesses can't speak fluently (except some Asian hostesses). Japanese hostesses are not forced to have sexual relationship, but some foreign hostesses are.
They have to call their customers everyday to let them visit the club (bar) again, and are obliged to engage in dates with customers outside of the club. These are probably difficult for foreign hostesses.
As for Caucasian hostesses, some East European and Russian are working legally. They are coming to Japan with entertainment Visa. But Japan don't issue this Visa for advanced countries such as the US. It's issued for some famous musicians, artists, and movie stars.

The trend is as same as the Japanese show-biz industry. The sales of J-rock and pop always surpass foreign music. There are few Caucasian TV personalies who speak Japanese. Even the sales of Japanese movies surpassed American movies last year.
Japan isn't as same as Hong kong and Singapore. I think language is more important for Japanese life.

And the phrase " why do so many Asians try to achieve the Western look?" is weird.
Bigger eyes and double eyelid are not uncommon in S.E.A, as Thai and Indonesia. Hair dye also existed in Asia. Tanning and leg extension surgery are for westerner only? Too funny.
Today's cloth is western origin. However, as medieval Europeans changed their fashion, Asian countries also brought them in their life during 20th century. And today they create their own fashions. Isn't yours "Made in China"? Is it a copy? No, it is just a economical issue.
As for the cosmetics and makeup techniques, today lots western people from those industries come to Tokyo to look for new cosmetics and technique every year. Bihaku (skin whitening) is popular in Japan. But you know the meaning of "white" for the skin of Yellow race and Caucasian are not the same.
In anime, they are drawing their own imaginary world.
Only westerner, especially American Caucasian, think Asian adore of the west or America.
If you think so, you better keep a distance from Asia. Cos you are the origin and the BEST, right? Save the origin! (silly)
Oh I forgot, lots people came from Britain.

I think you already got a good A's. But I want to add something, too. Don't believe everything you hear. Even SOME Japanese has bigger eyes with the double eyelid without plastic surgery. Not all but some do spend a lot of money for a tanning in U.S and same as Japan. I know a lot of Japanese cross dresser guys do breast and face job often ( I had a friends so I do know.) but I never heard woman did it like a ppl already mentioned. But I do remember one of my old co. worker mentioned she did her face lift done.

It simply depends on the individual person's desire. Some might like having a Caucasian looking woman and some might not. A lot of White women go to tanning places so does that mean they want to be black, latino or a darker skinned race? Maybe, and in some cases maybe not. There isn't a definite answer to things like this.

It seems to me you're sticking in your throat that Japanese guy think Caucasian woman are less attractive than Japanese women.

If Japanese women try to achieve the Western look, that doesn't mean we guys prefer to Gaijin. To each his own.

There are not alot of foreigners in Japan to begin with. So I am pretty sure Japanese men prefer Japanese hostess.

I don't think Japanese who want to look different are specifically aiming to "look western". I think they are embracing a certain style that they like, or look. Thats like me saying white girls who get deep tans want to look black or saying that black girls who straighten their hair want to be white. That is not the case, and probably not true for majority. Since you may rebuttal with extreme surgeries, I will also add ,for example, girls who want to have butt enhancement are not looking to be of another group who has natural large bottoms, they just want to have a look they think is nice. They just like the look and think it is pretty. People are always borrowing styles/looks from other nations, that does not mean that individual is aiming to look like that other group. That is a very absurd comment.
