Which one? we have roughly 22 fires going now. At least two were started by arsonists--in one fire (Orange County) three diff. places found where fire was set. Other one was started by a guy on a motorcycle--he was caught. I'm sure more will be found to be due to arson.

However, the whether conditions are what made them spread so fast and become out of control very quickly. We are in our third year of a severe drought. Have only had about 3 inches of rain fall this year (normal is 4 to 5 times that) and it was 10 degrees hotter than average for this time of year. Worst of all were the very strong, hot, extremely dry Santa Ana winds. these are winds that blow from the inland desert areas out toward the coast. By the time the winds hit the Los Angeles, San Diego, Malibu area, they were at 3 to 4 % humidity and blowing in all kinds of directions, constantly changing course. Add to that the terrain--virtually all areas affected are hilly, canyon areas where fighting fires is much harder. In addition, some of the vegetation here-conifers, eucalyptus, chaparral--makes great fuel.

Arson and a pair of appropriate deaths (so some distance 2 firefighters have lost their lives and 5 people who refused to evacuate have been left trapped and assumed ineffective) if caught, this individual would be in reformatory for something of his existence.

the SantaAnna winds, sometimes gusting from 70-100 miles per hour, hurricane strength, blew down a couple trees, it's thought and the downed power lines set off at least one of the fires....
likely a tossed cigarette caused another one.... they don't 'just happen'... there's a cause, always.....
