Can someone please tell me what kind of spider this is? i found it alive on my living room floor, close to where my son was playing. It is black with (i think ) 8 legs..it is very fat, like the size of a thumb..the legs were very thick as well. It was not shiny at all-almost like a fur look...THIS IS NOT A BLACK WIDOW!!!! I tried to find this online but had no luck. I need to know how to get rid of them and are they poison. I did not see any bite marks on my son, but what signs should I look for? How can I tell if there is just one or a nest?

Here's a link to several common spiders. Look through them and see if you can find it. (link 1)

Most spiders can't kill you. Even a black widow has it's limits.
How dangerous is the bite of widow spiders?
Only the bite of the female, usually the adult female, is potentially dangerous. Although extremely painful and temporarily debilitating, fatalities from untreated widow bites are uncommon.(link 2)

Here's a good spider killer spray (link 3)

First, I wouldn't worry - if the spider had bitten your son, you would have known it - kids aren't shy about letting you know when something startles or hurts them. Second, you didn't say where you live, but your description sounds most like one of the big jumping spiders - try Phidippus audax for a search. If you look at it, 3 dots (1 big, 2 small) on the back is pretty diagnostic. They can deliver a bite you can feel, but they're not known to be dangerous at all. Fall is 'spider in house' time, but while it can be exciting, it's not likely to be a problem for your kid(s) (mine were at significantly greater risk from all the things they could pull down on themselves, or the things they could find and eat). I wouldn't worry about exterminators - they're vastly more dangerous to your kids than almost any spider could ever be. Keep the poisons out of the house until the kid's a bit older, I say.

I don't know about the type but a spider that large has had time to live in one place for a while and is most likely pregnant. Normally I wouldn't worry b/c when you see spiders it means that they are eating everything else in the house. But if you are worried for you son I'd call an exterminator.

Not really enough info on the spider since there are thousands of species of spiders. Check your son for red marks or small whelps. Make an appointment for an exterminator to spray your house. Save the dead spider as they may be able to tell you what type it is.

That doesn't fit the description of any very dangerous spider. Little kids could still get a painful bite but it is probably less dangerous than a bee.

I wouldn't worry about it. There are very few spiders in the world that pose any threat to something as big as a human and they are mostly found in South America. It sounds like a common spider. Probably just coming in to get warm.
