Not sure how to explain, the water level in my toilet becomes low after it is flushed. So about every 1 hour or so, my toilet starts running, constantly filling with water. Once it reaches the water level, its stop. It does this all day long. Any ideas and do it yourself advice?

P.S. Hiring a plummer is not advice...

Thanks,

Sounds like you have a slow leak. The flapper valve(the round rubber thing covering the hole in the toilet tank) is not searing properly. Most likely worn out. Once that is replaced you can determine if in fact the water level is low or was repeatedly filling as a result of the water level going down over an hours time do to the flapper valve not seating. Go to your local Home depot , lowes, builders square etc and purchase a new flapper valve. It is very easy to replace. Just unhook the chain from the existing flapper and attach your new flapper. When the toilet tank fills notice the water level. You may never hear the toilet fill again except after flushing. If the water level is lower than you want then you only have to adjust the floater, this is done by turning the adjustment on the tube counter clockwise and you will notice the ball mechanism stops at a higher level.Just turn it until the water level stops at your desired level. Remember to turn your toilet water source off before replacing the valve or making an adjustment to the ballcock. When you have finished just turn the water back on. The water valve is located behind your toilet normal a little to the left or right of the commode.

Turn off the water supply valve under the toilet. Flush. remove the tank lid and lift up the flapper (it is connected to the chain/strap that comes from the handle). Wipe the area it sits in and the bottom of the flapper with a rag. Sometimes deposits build up there and stop it from sealing properly. Check the chain to make sure it is allowing the flapper to seat all the way but not excessive slack. After wiping off, pour a couple cups of coffee (liquid only, no grounds) into the tank and turn the water valve back on. Wait a bit and see if the water in the bowl turns color. If so, the flapper is leaking and you will need to replace it. If the bowl is not filling back up all the way to where it was before flushing, check inside the tank. There should be a tube that goes from the fill valve to the overflow tube. Make sure it is aimed into the tube. This is what fills the bowl during flushes.

im not sure if i totally understand, but im going to try ;)

first off, wait until the tank stops filling and lift the lid. take some food colouring and put a lot of drops in the TANK only. leave it a while and see if the water in the BOWL of the toilet starts turning that colour. if it does, turn off your water to the toilet (little tap on a small pipe attached to tank) take off the flapper that covers the hole in the middle of the tank that goes to the bowl. take that piece into a harware store and buy one that looks just like it. should be less than $5

if the tank just fills higher than it should, then adjust the float ( big black ball) by threading in further on or off the rod its attached to.
worst case.if that is not the problem, for about $25-30 you can take out all the insides of the tank and replace them. if you do still have the big ball float, they have nicer ones now that work better and are smaller, and attached to the filling mechanism and are totally adjustable.

your flapper valve is bad. they are made out of rubber and get worn around the edges. goto home depot and buy a new one. cost about 3 bucks. they just clip on.

you'll need to drain the water in your toilet.

to drain just turn off the valve underneath you toilet and flush a couple of time. the water will drain out.

also, you'll have to play with the chain on the flapper. it's trial an error to get it right.

to get to all the components, take off the cover to your toilet. it just sits on the top. be careful and don't drop it. it could break.

good luck to you....don't pay a plumber $75 for a job that will take less than $5 and 1/2 of your time.

Take the lid off the back and flush. Does the plug go all the way down before it starts refilling. Does the chain need to be shortened or let out more so plug will fit?

This is a great resource I found years ago.
Entertaining too learn and enjoy!

It sounds like the flapper that allows water from your tank to the bowl is leaking. They are not expensive and are "usually" quite easy to replace...check out this site for some options:
