American sent a person to the moon prior to USSR, but USSR was the first state to send a unnamed satellite on the moon, and then they were the first to make pictures of the hidden face of the moon. It is told that their capsule designed for going on the moon exploded during a failed launch.

true that the russians unmanned spaceships luna 1, 2 & 3 were the first to land in moon on 1959.
false that russian flag was planted on moon before US in 1969.
though, yuri alekseyevich gagarin of soviet union in 1961 was the first person to travel in space, it was neil armstrong of united states who first set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969.

that's a huge controversy, maybe we did maybe we didn't.
If you're from Russia (USSR) they would say they landed first, but if you're from America it's vice versa.
