It is an abbreviation for emotional. It doesn't mean a poser it means someone who usually has trouble at home and starts dressing like they are depressed and they may cut them selves in many places on the arm.

It started out as a music thing (a combo of punk and alternative rock) and worked its way into a sort of poser goth fashion style, so yes, an emo person is a poser, of a sort. Just not in the traditional sense. (Because your true goth doesn't whine about how the world hates them. They revel in their hatred for the world.)

emo is a stupid label, like punk or goth.
it generated in the 90s, but it's just now getting popular, especially since the assholes of the world need to think up more mean names to sling at people. but it's okay.
i don't consider it an insult. =D

The term "EMO" refers to any moron who tries to be original by sweeping there hair down over one eye (emo-swoop) just like every other emo. They like music sung by bands with ridiculous names that mention dying in some way or another who sing crap music, usually sung by some jackass who is about to cry. Some emos cut themselves to feel better.
Angry emos are referred to as "Emo Screamos."
