I just got a cable service because I moved and didn't want to deal with getting a new dish installed and they wanted alot of money to install if I didn't give DISH an 18 month commitment. I am starting to regret it. The Motorola cable box I got from comcast can only record about a week or less of the shows I watch.(I record alot). There is a really bad lag using the box too. I switch between fast forward and play and it take at least 2 seconds. Also I have to raise my arm up to point the remote at the box in order for it to do anything. The DISH box I could point the remote the opposite direction and it would work.

Does anyone else have these problems with the comcast box? Is there an upgrade option to a better box? I read a story about Comcast offering TiVo boxes in some areas, can you get these in San Jose?

I have Time warner over here (same as comcast)
and well yes Im planning to buy my own also. It sucks also but you will need a cable card that the comcast will HAVE to provide.

Cable DVR's unfortunately don't have nearly the recording space as Dish Dvrs have. You can usually get up to 100 hours on a dish DVR and about 25 - 30 hours on cable depending on what you record. There is no upgrade for this the size they have is the size they have.
Motorola/tivo boxes are right now only being tested in the New England area. Very few customers have them, it is mostly in house testing. There is no real word yet when they will be widely available. It will probably be a while if they are just now getting test units out.
As far as the remote issue goes...I have no idea I have on of the new motorola boxes with the cable card on board and it works just fine

You could always call Comcast and ask them.

If not, call Tivo (they're just over the hill in Santa Clara!) and ask why Comcast isn't offering their new product in Tivo's own backyard.

The Comcast/Tivo box has been in the works for a long time. Comcast started bragging about Tivo about 2 years ago...but nothing ever showed up. Tivo's headquarters decided to give Comcast a run for the money by offering their hardware for free - but you still had to get the subscription separately. Still, I think Comcast got the message loud and clear...

Generally No.

The cable box is tied into the cable and guide system like a computer. They are no-longer 'dumb' devices you can hook into with a different box.

The Dish remote was 'better' because it was both IR and RF - it would work from another room.

The hesitation in the menu system was a problem in LA, but then it seems to go away, then come back a few weeks later.

I mainly use a Harmony Logitech 688 remote (it has dedicated PVR buttons, and a skip-forward button which the Motorola remote does not have). You might re-locate the PVR higher in your rack so it is always visible from your seat to make it more reliable.
