Its so scary to think of it and children are so vulnerable, we need to educate our children from when they are young and make sure they arent afraid to talk to us so they are honest.

I think being a parent of a child in public education is a higher calling requiring more effort, concentration and communication than homeschooling. I think it's harder and more rewarding though. My kids aren't quite in Kindergarten yet - but I think about this alot. How do I really know who is in charge of my kids and can I trust them? There are so many people who have positions of authority and power and misuse them and do not submit to their authorities properly. Some people would say that I'm an over protective parent but I'm going to try to get to know the school and the teachers and ask some of the tough questions. I also have a developmentally delayed son and I worry all the time because they want him in a preschool for developmentally delayed kids and children with delays and disabilities are much more highly likely to be abused than other kids because they don't understand what is happening and can't communicate it and so the parents don't figure it out to stop it.

My daughters band director was arrested for having sex with an 8th grader last year. We all liked this man and trusted him with our children. Most of the band had Saturday lessons with him that he did for free. Some of us went to school with his children. He has been active in the community a long time. After this all happened we find out that most of the kids knew. They are 12, 13 and 14 years old so they could not see this as true so they all kept quiet. He is now in prison but this girl has to live with the consequences. It was quite ugly for a while. We live in a small town.

As a parent I educated my children when they were young about strangers, also about people who may try to take advantage of them because they are young & female. That is the only thing you can really do now a days. Teachers aren't being screened before they actually teach. They should all be enforced to take some kind of intense psychological test before they even receive their license so the education department can determine if that individual is "mentally fit" to teach & be safe with children.

It does happen from time to time and this is why it is so important to ask children what happened during their stay at school. Never disregard anything and investigate respectfully.
