It's a cave-man reaction. They form alliances with those most likely to fit in with the rest of the tribe, and unite against those they perceive as unable to sustain the group mentality. It's completely ridiculous at this stage of our evolution, but some insecure people will still do it. You should pity them. Stay in school, get your PhD, and then honk the horn of your Mercedes when you see them in their work detail along the highway.

I'm not so sure that they do but if they do maybe its because they know that how to behave in society can be learned. A person just needs to practice. As long as a person has manners and is thoughtful they can't go wrong.

I find it difficult to be in situations where I don't know most of the people there as I'm not very good at small talk. So I'm pretty quiet and I'm sure people think that I'm a bore but at least I'm a mannerly bore.

I avoid these situations when I can but 'grin and bear it' when I can't.

Because "society" is made up of social people. If you're not social, you won't fit in and people will feel nervous being around people who don't, won't, or can't follow those implicit rules. People that don't have those skills should either get some or not worry about it.
