McClellan was a major-general, and then General - in - Chief of the Union Army (November 1861-March 1862), when Lincoln relieved him of command. Although largely responsible for raising the well organized and well trained Army of the Potomac at the beginning of the war, McClellan lacked energy and boldness in the field, missing opportunities to decisively defeat Lee and thus end the war both during The Seven Days battles, and at Antietam. This led to his dismissal by Lincoln, who lost patience with his overall inactivity and ineffectiveness in the field.Lincoln claimed "...if you gave McClellan a million men, he'd then swear the enemy had two million, and refuse to move until you gave him three million." After his dismissal, McClellan entered politics and ran against Lincoln in the 1864 Presidential election, standing on an anti war platform.
