On many kinds of windows, there are these little "eyelashes" for lack of a better term. They're permanent, flexible, and they insulate a small area. I think they'd work very well around my doors (I can see some daylight), but I can't just go up to the hardware store guy and say, "Hey man, got any window lashes?" Well, I could, but I'm trying not to sound like an idiot if it's at all possible. If you know what these are called, the least you'll get is a thumbs up, probably best answer status. Thanks.

I don't know if 'weather stripping' extends into the kind that looks like hairs, but maybe. I really don't know what I, uh, don't know. Horribly frustrating.

I believe the material you are talking about is felt. Check out this website, about the 3rd subheading down.

it is called weather stripping, although it comes in different styles. my favorite for doors are different from the ones you are looking at for windows.
what you get is a package with two appx 7' strips for either side of the door and one appx 3' for the top. they are aluminum tracks with vinyl cushioned strips that the door seals against.
go into the store and ask to be directed to the weather striping section. first off, look at what refills are available, and buy weatherstripping kits that will take that refill. some are kind of disposable. it comes with all the screws you need to install it and instructions.
screw the strips to your door frame so your door closes against them.
in a few years when the vinyl is cracked just go buy a few refills slide them in to the aluminum track
