to Cuba. My question is, if someone fights for my freedom, do I get to use it, or does he get to keep it?

Was he really a vet?

I notice you have posted no details of the disagreement, and I would have thought, if you believed it was important, you would have posted it looking for some kind of support.

It depends on what the disagreement is about, but if it was in any way insulting to him and the memory of comrades he saw blown to pieces while they were fighting for your freedom, you should probably be kicked in the crotch. With freedom comes responsibility to realize that freedom is not absolute.

What war was he a vet of? Because I can't think of a recent war where our freedom was threatened; we've pretty much been the aggressive ones for a while now. He would have to have been 80 for that stance to count.
So I'm calling his whole supposition into question: I don't think he was fighting for your freedom at all.
If he was, though, it doesn't really seem like freedom if he can horde it from you, and paints him to be the hypocrite that he is.

use it. The question for him is I supplied my tax dollars to the war so should I be able to tell the generals how to fight with it? Same theory he is using. A footnote to the question is the last war fought for freedom was WW2.

You really must of said something really dumb to make him say that to you.... people are fighting for your freedom RIGHT NOW - they fight SO YOU CAN KEEP your freedom as a citizen of the USA. You ARE ALREADY FREE, nobody wants YOUR freedom, they just do NOT WANT TO BE DISRESPECTED by jelly brained ding dongs who have no CLUE!!!!

Simple response - if you get in that situation again.

Tell him "you fought for freedom of speech, my right to disagree with you".

He's a hypocrite, the freedom he was fighting for is the exact freedom you were using. you have the freedom to disagree with him, the president, the pope whoever you want to disagree with. it's the cornerstone of our democracy is the right to disagree with what people say. you don't have to move to cuba because you don't believe what he says is correct. next time someone does that to you, tell him to move to cuba, because if he was so hell bent on his freedoms he wouldn't be trying to deprive you of yours.

discourse casts the wicked ideas out from the marketplace of thought.

Is that the question that you asked him or is that your question here? If you asked him that I can see why he was annoyed with you.He fought for freedom for all of us. That means that you get it and he gets it too.

Just a suggestion:

Consider enlisting, fight for your own freedom and that of others....then see how you feel about the issue.

Sounds like you've got the double talk down, 2 points for me.

I have wondered that many times when I've talked to folks who fought but with whom I disagreed. As far as I can tell, I seem to be free to speak my mind, as long as what I say agrees with THEM. Just a hunch, but I THINK they missed the point... ;-)
