Hum... I would have said that the other way around... that interest groups encourage political parties.

Let me think...
1. An attempt to get the interest group to assist in motivating the public on an issue. IE) they might motivate a religious group against gay marriage... that group might pay for commercials and get the public thinking it is a major issue.

2. Same thing but this would influence donations... more contributions.

3. Use them to motivate their base or even a group that is not within their base but a targeted group.
