I had that problem myself when I was in college. I didn't mind cleaning, or cooking for that matter, but it was annoying not to get any help. You're right, the living room is for both of you. If he/she wants to be a slob in their own room, that's their prorogative, but they should help in the living room and kitchen. My neatness finally got up my roommate's butt and she asked me to move out. That was a shame, we were good friends and I really liked living there. I didn't grumble about the cleaning, she just got tired of watching me do it. Go figure.

Theres really not much you can do with a bad roommatie. Maybe just going up to him and politely say, "Hey man, I been cleaning up a lot lately. Do you think you can help me out?" Or maybe when hes watching TV start picking up stuff right in front of him, hoping he gets the hint

When you clean and you have to pick up stuff that your roommate leaves around then put it in the wrong place and let him go find it...perhaps when he starts spending too much time looking for stuff he'll learn to put it away so he can find it...my ex-used to leave clothes all over and I was hanging up the jacket or putting the socks in his hamper...then i got tired of it so I started putting knots in the clothes and throwing it behind a chair in our spare room...finally after weeks he came in one day and opened the closet and hung his jacket on the door...so back to behind the chair it went...he was frantic looking all over the house for it...finally when he asked I told it probably it fell off and landed behind the chair...he thought i was stupid...but finally he went to look there and found all his clothes in knots and dirty...when he asked what it was doing there I told him flat out...that since he didnt' want to put it away that i put it there cause I didn't want the house to look messy...and especially cause I didnt' want to see it either...that was the cure!

I hate messes too and living with a messy person gets soo annoying.

I say just leave it for them to clean
Or
Tell them to their face that you shouldn't be the only one cleaning. I mean, it's true right?

Tell him to start picking up behind his trifling self or he got to roll. if that don't work then i say leave the mess there and invite his friends and other ppl so that may visit and see how trifling he is. If he gets embarrassed maybe that will help him to clean up his act.

Make a joke, keep it light, "hey, maybe should nickname our room, we could start calling it Katrina. Your turn to clean it man though, seriously, come on..(smile)"

If he doesn't get it, make a chore list, post it by his bed: week one: 1. dust-(his name). 2. vacuum (your name)... he may not have grown up with the same Mom you did, may not even know what to do....

Perhaps he does not know what cleaning up after himself is so show him how it is done. If he knows and it is pure lazy or a do not care attitude, then cop our and find another room-mate.

Kiss him passionately on the lips. When you pull away, tell him that that was a warning, next time he leaves a dirty room, you're slipping the tongue!
