how did 18 come to be the "legal" age to be an adult. is this most countries ?
i'm thinking maybe 14 to drive and 16 "legal" age to be an adult.
i'd hold 21 to drink though. 16 may sound young but these kids are smart and i think they could do great. i'm just wondering your thoughts.

I don't know when it became the legal age. It was before my time. I'm 50 now. True the kids now a days are smarter. But the problem is they are not mature enough. So are not mature enough at an old age. I would raise the legal age to 21. To get a learners permit should be 16 and a drivers license to 18. An leave the drinking age alone.

Because you're still in high school until you're 18.. which means you don't know anything! You think you do.. but you don't. There are some teenagers who are very intelligent and mature, but let's be honest, most of them would do some serious damage.

Come back to this question when you're 25 or 30.. I bet you'll have a different perspective.

---------

Why would you want someone who is still in HIGH SCHOOL to be considered a legal adult? I didn't know ANYTHING about ANYTHING until after college, and even then I still had a lot to learn.

Forget about the handful of smart, driven, mature kids you know.. think about the majority of them. Do you really want a 16 year old voting?

btw.. I have some serious doubts about you being 35.

I'm not sure most 21 year olds are adults much less 18 year olds. My opinion is that if at 18 you can fight for your country and be prosecuted as an adult that you should be able to legally purchase and consume alcohol. I don't think the government should be able to pick and choose at what age you can do what. It should be across the board.

The country as a whole dumbed down our youth by forcing kids that don't want to go to school to go to school and those schools had to slow down curriculums to suit the unwilling or just plain stupid kids... Now they're all stupid and I'm surprised they can tie their shoes at 18, let alone be an "adult".

These Kids don't have work ethic like our grandparents had from working on farms from 5 and up. They wouldn't know responsibility if it stabbed them in the eye.

That would be terrible. 14 year olds driving???? I've seen 17 years olds who can't drive for anything!! And 16 to be an adult? People aren't even done with puberty at 16

It helps to have at least finished high school to be able to support yourself. Most 14 year olds think real driving is like on the PSP. Overall, most people under 18 and some over it don't want to be responsible for anything.

Some 16 Year olds are smart yes. But not ALL. The majority of dumb 16yo to smart 16yo is too big to consider 16 to be adult.

In Japan, 20 is considered that age of becoming an adult. 20 is when Japanese can drink, and I think buy cigarettes. Although, Japanese can get a driver's license when they become 18.
