Let your tap water tell you,if you have nice hard water with a high pH and good buffering,go with a bunch of Tanganyikans. I really like Brichardi, and any of the Julidichromis, but there are literally hundreds more, like the shell dwellers.
If you have access to nice soft water with a neutral pH,that is easy to drive lower, then look at the Amazon, and especially the Rio *****, the Pike Cichlids are very interesting and colorful, and a nice challenge, or if you really like an Amazon challenge try spawning some Altum Angels, their really picky.
If you're thinking about a marine tank, but don't want to go all the way, grow some Red Mangrove seeds, and leave a beach and try Mudskippers,Archerfish,Scats or Chromide cichlids in a brackish brew.( The lighting might be expensive, but those Mangrove roots are soooo cool.)
