No - an item or an object is a symbol, so could a name, a place be a symbol. I am not big on symbolism. I am with Freud when he said "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." I do not consciously write saying to myself "I will have her carry a white rosebud - symbol of virtue - in her left hand" Sometimes they are there, sometimes not. When I teach or tutor literature, I would rather see students get the whole effect of the author's work than struggle trying to worry about missing a hidden symbol. Call me the renegade literature teacher - but sometimes teachers just hit too hard on that. That is because usually they aren't authors too.

What is the book you read? Something could be a symbol for curiosity - like a cat.

I think symbols are more objects thatn feelings. for example, in Harry Potter the wand is a symbol because it represents protection and power.
