It could be a number of things. It could be the tierods, but then again it could also be the CV joints, or even the power steering pump.
There are cases of the Cavalier having broken springs and/or struts that have caused a similar noise that you have described. Such a case was my 2000 Z24. Broken drivers side strut, eventually I replaced both front struts and strut mounts with KYB's. The best on the market.
Have a look at the springs and struts when you pull the wheels off, and look for any breaks.

Not sure what sort of noise you're hearing. A "clunk" could be tie rods- drive slowly to get 'em checked. A grinding sort of noise *while* the wheel is turned could be constant-velocity joints- tough to replace on your own and something you don't want to fail while you're driving. A kind of whine or squeal could be the power steering- If this fails, you'll only have muscle power to turn with- not so bad at 10+ mph, but parallel parking would be just a memory. Still, get this checked, too.
Whatever is causing the problem, you need someone good to look at your car and see what's up. If you try cartalk.com, they used to have a page where people put up their trusted car repair shops around the country.

The ball joint on the lateral control arm makes the noises you described. Most of the time they would get loose and I believe there is a life time warranty recall on the parts even if replaced already. I have seen 3 Eclipses with the ball joints going dry and creaking and popping on occasion. Any Mitsubishi dealer should warranty them and if they give you a hard time ask to speak with the District Representative. The factory has replaced so many of these lateral control arms that I doubt if you will have trouble, besides it's a safety item. When they come apart the suspension collapses and you can't steer worth a damn.

If it is a clicking / popping or a grinding noise it is your CV joint. They usually cost about $200 per axle to fix. My car had one on the left and the right side. Not sure if you have two also but I think all front wheel drive cars have two.
Not a bad answer for a girl, huh?

cv joints, if you turn and hear a clicking noise. tie rods are serious though. when you get it fixed have them checked. if a tie rod breaks off the wheel will come right out from under you.

if i knew more about the sound i could probably help you,it could be the tie rods,or anything to do with the steering, what would be the best to do is have it checked out, this way they can check everything ,tie rods will cause a popping sound, but so will a bad cv joint, that why its better to have it checked out, then you,ll know for sure what it is,good luck with it.
