Women who smoke statistically have babies with lower birth rate, making it harder for the baby to thrive. The pot may cause neurological damage that may not be evident for years. The child could be classified as a "slow learner" because of the brain cell death in the womb. Children have so many obstacles that they have to get through to survive, why start their life out like that?

BTW, it is not necessary for all of you above to be so rude. That won't help the situation.

The thing is there are many women who go through their entire preg doing drugs and smokin cigs and they have healthy beautiful children, then there are those who take a couple of hits of pot and have a developmentally challenged child. My point is it affects everyone differently, but if she cared for her child she would not even want to risk it.
I dont know how people can even think of what could happen and still do drugs, but some do like your friend. I think that she just needs more help have her go to counseling and get a drug counselor to help her quit at least while she is pregnant. Oh and be there fro her i am 31 weeks and think about drinking all the time but i would never do it now, it is really hard to give up somethng you love. Good luck.

It's not safe to smoke pot while being pregnant. There are definitely some possibilites of things that can go wrong, and not all the effects are completely known.

That being said, she's better off smoking pot then cigarettes, as cigarettes have more chemicals and are more harmful. Let her know how you feel, and let her know that there ARE risks involved... but other then that it's really out of your hands.

She really needs to cut back a LOT. Smoking causes blood vessels to constrict, including those of the placenta. This will decrease the amount of blood that gets to the baby. The baby won't grow properly and could suffer damage to its brain. She needs to be honest with her doctor. There are new drugs that decrease the amount of nicotine the body absorbs - which could lessen damage to the baby. A pack a day plus pot is way too much! There are ways to quit but she needs help!

Of course there is a chance that something could happen to her baby... she is putting tons of toxins in her body everyday!! Everything she puts in her body affects her baby and she should know that! Is she going to the doctor? I hope so... unfortunately for you, it's her body and her baby and if she wants to smoke pot and cigarettes, then there isn't much you can do. You just make sure and take care of your body and your baby... don't support her habits and don't be around her when she's doing that kind of stuff. That second hand smoke can affect your baby too. That's sooo sad....

My sister and I were pregnant at the same time, but she delivered in July and I'm due any day now. We were both smokers before we got pregnant. When I found out, I quit, when she found out, she cut back, but then started up to about a pack a day when she was around 6 months. She beats herself up about it a lot, but claims that the stress of quitting would have put too much pressure on her body and mind so her and her doctor decided it would be best for her to continue smoking throughout the pregnancy.

I personally think I'd like to smack her doctor around a bit, and tell him what I really think, but giving advice to a pregnant woman to KEEP doing something that WILL harm a fetus is absolutely ridiculous.

It is possible that nothing bad will happen to your friend's baby, but that possibility is so small, I wouldn't even risk it. If your friend really cared about herself and her baby, she'd do some research and find out how much damage she is potentially doing to her baby before he/she even has a chance to live. Low birth weight, addiction, colic, asthma, a lot of things could be the result of smoking while pregnant. Go down to your local health department and ask for some reading material on how smoking affects your unborn baby and try to encourage your friend to slow down at the very least. She owes it to the life she decided to create and keep.

To be honest everyone is different it could have a very bad effect and it could have no effect. Smoking pot when pregnant is wrong. Smoking ciggs is wrong. Not that i have much room to talk i smoked ciggs through both of my pregnancys. The biggest problem is it can cause low birth weight. Asthma problems later etc.... But honestly i think sense this is your friend it is your friends business! Maybe you should do some research from your DOCTOR and not Y/A then go to her in a polite way and tell her what you know. Express how you feel. But also know that unltimately its her decision.

Her baby might not be ok. Pot does effect your brain cells and that would be seriously detrimental to a baby still developing them. Moreover, the cigarettes and the pot both will have an effect on the child's lungs. Her child could end up with lifelong health problems if she doesn't quit, and she may end up in jail if the authorities know she is using drugs while pregnant.

They can take her baby away for smoking marijuana. And cigarettes can be harmful, I think more harmful then marijuana will ever be. There is a link that will give you more information on marijuana and pregnancy.
