would you respect a friend more if they loaned you $$ for a crucial thing (like car, house payment) and later made it a gift....

or a friend who loaned you $2000 and asked for you to pay it back slowly?

Neither would make me respect a friend more. Are you sure you mean respect? I guess I would feel validated as a friend. But when it comes to respect......I would respect them more if they won a million dollars and gave half of it to a charity or research foundation. I would respect them more if they donated their free time to community service. Loaning a friend in trouble doesn't warrant respect. It just tells you that your friend cares about you or considers you unable to repay a loan. lol

I would respect myself more if I paid it back slowly rather then took the money from them. It is not my friends job to pay for my car or house payment if i needed help i would want to pay it back

the one that doesn't want anything back will have something in mind. I prefer the one with slow payment because an obligation is an obligation. Although the first condition is tempting, just ask yourself if you would do the same because if your answer is no, then ask yourself what would make you accept such condition unless you have some plan. A real friend will want to teach you the responsibility of paying your debt not because of the money but because he/she wouldn't want you to become dependent on him/her.

I would respect more the friend who said the latter. I could never take a lot of money from a friend and not pay it back - it just wouldn't feel right.

The first rule of life is you don't ask friends or family for money. In the event that you do, then by all means pay it back as quickly as possible.

If the money is available, and you don't care about it, make it a gift after they have started paying you back. They obvious need it badly and you are in a better situation. WHo knows how karma will work in your favor. IF they insist on paying it back, then let them

This question is rather personal question. It is an admitted fact that "A friend in need is a friend in deed". If he helped you financially, naturally you will be inclined to respect the friend as he stood with you and provided you financial help you needed.

Depends on the friend. If they were financially set, I'd still appreciate the one who asked me to pay it back. I expect people to pay me back.
