While there are only a few spiders in the United States that are really dangerous to humans, there are significant numbers around the world. The black widow and recluse spiders have very toxic venom that can be life threatening to humans. Some wolf spiders in South America, and some running spiders (family Chiracanthium) worldwide have venom that causes painful symptoms in humans. Pigeon spiders of West Africa give very painful bites. In Australia there are between 50 and 100 venomous species at least two of which can be life threatening to humans, the red-back and the Sydney funnel-spider.
Hope this help's you...~~Sarah~~

While all spider species are venomous, but only a small portion of them pose any threat to humans. Here are the ones I can think of:

Black Widow - throughout the U.S.
Red Back - Australia & Southeast Asia
Brown Recluse - throughout the U.S.
Hobo Spider (allegedly) - Northwest U.S.
Brazilian Wandering Spider - Brazil Venezuela and French Guiana
Sydney Funnel-web Spider - In the areas around Sydney, Australia
Mouse Spider - Australia again

Now the term "dangerous to humans" is somewhat ambiguous. Envenomations by even these spiders are rarely life threatening and ususally only result in extreme pain and local tissue death in full grown humans. They pose a higher risk for children due to their lower body weight which would amplify the venom's systemic effects.

As for the risk of death from a spider bite, the Sydney funnel-web, for all its hype, has only resluted in 13 known deaths, mostly children. The Brazilian Wandering Spider is touted as the most venomous spider in the world, but only 2.3% of envenomations were strong enough to require antivenin.

As for handling spiders. Most species of spider are not aggressive and use envenomation as a last defense against perceived threats. Black widows, redbacks, hobo spiders, brown recluses and mouse spiders fit into this category. Sydney funnel-webs and Brazilian Wandering Spiders are more aggressive and not so reluctant to bite humans who come too close. Wandering spiders in particular are known for their quickness on the attack. Personally, I don't recommend the handling of any of these spiders because there's a world of pain behind their bites, but the less aggressive species can be approached with a little less aprehension.

There are poisonous spiders pretty much on every contintent, ...and yeah it is ridiculous how people freak out about anything that crawls.....I take spiders out all the time, and anything else too....I dont pick up though, as the recluse spider is dangerous......and the black widow, as well others, so i just put a clear cup over and slide a stiff peice of paper under it, like an envelope, then take it outside. I dont kill anything. I'm guessing you dont either, good for you!!

Most spiders are either harmless, or if they bite you, the worst they do is leave a minor mark. The two baddies in the US are the brown recluse spider, a very small spider, and the black widow, which is noted by the red "hourglass" on its abdomen. Of course, if you see that, you are probably too close.

Some are so poisonous to humans that death would occur within an hour of being bitten, (daddy longlegs), but, their fangs are too short to penetrate the epidermis. I'd suggest googling "poisonous spiders" and find a list compiled by the AMA. There are quite a few of them.

I am scared to death of all of them. If I had one on me in
Wal-mart, I would be naked in a matter of seconds.
