Both units are outdoors and are combined in one unit. My house size is 1100 sq ft. The heating part of the unit is gas and the cooling is electric. How much would it be to replace both? How much to replace just the heating?

My dad, the handy-man guy, will guess that it would take $4500 to replace both, but he's not sure.

sounds like you are describing a typical residential roof top unit ducted into the house. (doesn't necessarily mean its on the roof) Estimates are free, call a couple local contractors and ask for an estimate, couple of bonuses in your favor are. 1. Power is already at unit. 2. Gas is already at unit. 3. Unit is ussually not that labour intensive to replace.

Personnally i like replacing these versus re and re a furnace and heat pump, time wise they are quick and easy. If on a roof you may have to buck up for a crane though.

Unfortunatly your lack of info makes it impossible to guesstimate prices, need brand, size, High efficient, mid efficient, location blah, blah, blah.

It will depend on the size of the unit and how many BTU's. You are probably looking at $3,000 or less, get several estimates before purchasing, and ask around and see if any of your friends have had a new unit installed and if they were satisfied with the service before purchasing, you can also check with the better business bureau for referrals.
