My mom was an alcoholic for many years. As a result, we live far from each other, but we now have a relationship "over the phone. " Can anyone recommend some coping mechanisms so that I can continue to be patient with her when she has her emotional break downs?

You could try a support group like Alanon for relatives of Alcoholics. They will give you some insight into why they drink, how it changes who they are and how they think, and how to prevent the contamination of your life by their actions.

From my own experience that can be difficult. Especially if she brings you down with her problems. Your mom needs a life coach and it shouldn't be you. Give her a self help book about her problems and watch her face....I bet she won't know what your talking about...because she forgot because she was so freaking drunk! Next time screen your calls or hang up after 5 minutes of ranting. When she calls YOU back tell her you hadn't the time nor energy to help her. She's a grown up like you...so what's the problem Mum

As long as the relationship remains a communication by air, you are far from her problems. Remain calm on the phone by thinking about something nice, and be thankful you live far far away!

give her a few minutes to do her whining and then knock on your counter top and say you have to go.
