If you stop paying the athletes so much money, that will be just more money going to the owners. The money is going to come in anyway, why not let the guys who are generating the revenue get their fair share.
The athletes aren't the only ones making a lot of money, look at coaches, owners, General Managers, Trainers, etc.
But bottom line, the money is there so why not pay everybody.

It's all supply and demand. If the supply of athletes goes up then the price you have to pay to get them to play goes down.
So how do you increase the supply of athletes? Easy, you change the rules so that any Joe or Joanne average can be a superstar.
May be the NFL could change it's rules to include the drinking of a six pack of beer by the offending player every time there is a penalty.
The NBA could change the rules regarding fouls. A shooting foul is still two shots: Two from the free throw line for the player fouled, and two shots of Jack Daniels for the offending player.
MLB could use wiffle balls, and each outffielder should be required to carry and open can of beer at all times.
PGA could introduce a system of Mulligans, and complusory beer cart stops.
I know my answer includes the consumption of large doses of alcohol, but most Joe averages can't afford all the steroids and hard drugs the current superstars consume.

It's impossible really, unless you wiped out all the people that pay to watch a bunch of people running around in tights... And I'm disgusted to see that somebody thinks that athletes deserve 6 or 7 digit pay checks when all they do is work out and practice. There are millions of people in this world that don't get paid but about 5% of that, and do work that actually contributes something to our world. Pssh... Our president doesn't even deserve his paycheck. Anyway, that's my thought, but there you go...

honestly i dont think you could stop them from "getting overpaid" in your words, maybe if fans refused to go see games while they were paid this much it might work, but we all know thats not going to happen, anyways, i think they work a hell of a lot harder than the rest of us and deserve it
