Before the Europeans came they faced the normal problems associated with any nomadic tribe......food, weather, other warring tribes and disease.
When the Europeans came they brought with them diseases that the native Americans had no immunity for, such as small pox and yellow fever.
The new world settlers also decimated the great buffalo herds which were the mainstay for the Indians as food sources. Millions were killed for their hides in trade.....as well as Elk, bear, etc., you get the picture.
Finally, as the western plains were being "settled" the Indians themselves had their lands forcefully stripped from them, all their rights taken away, and were forced to live on government protected tracts of land called reservations. Resulting in the loss of an entire culture's way of life and freedom.
