I have a sporty and the stock gas tank was replaced with a 3 gallon one right off.
What was upsetting is that the 1.7 gallon stock one is good for less than o good ride around the valley.
As for OIL tanks, make sure your vent hoze is not kinked or plugged. I popped a oil dipstick but never blew the tank. Funny thing is the dipstick is a rubber stopper and should have popped off long before you blew a seam.
You should have had a big oil slick on your right cheek when the dipstick blew off, never thought that a seam might blow open.
Besides its Winter now. Get a bigger gas tank, fix the kinked vent and get ready for next year

Sorry to hear that, I have an 03 Sportster and have had no issues with it. In regards to one of the other answers above my "stock" tank was 3.8 gallons, I didn't think any Harley makes recently had anything smaller.

Harley's leak oil it's the nature of the beast make sure you don't have a kink in your line and check oil cap if all is well carry some extra oil in your bags and keep a eye on it ,little bit of oil on your bike wont hurt none. The way I look at it if your bike is clean your not riding enough. Get out there and crack the throttle back enjoy it's not a big deal.

take heart that things can always be worse. On poor fellow in my area was racing his bike and got black flagged so pulled off the track. It had been noticed that his petrol cap had come off and as he stopped the bike ignited. The heat melted his knee braces to his legs and he has been in hospital for a number of weeks.

As the previous posters pointed out you are basically SOL. That is the nature of the game. If you want reliability, but a Honda. If you bought the bike new from this dealer perhaps they have a used bike that they would consider letting you use as a loaner. It is a long shot, but worth asking.

Have you ever heard that old saying about Harley's " Ride a mile walk the rest" ? Still everyone wants one and is willing to put up with having to work on them just for the prestige of owning one.

Surprising. I hadn't heard that.
I thought they were still using push-in type plugs instead of caps. If that were the case, it would have popped the plug, preserving the tank.

Sorry, but this is the problem with Harleys. All that money you paid, and now you're waiting for repairs. Newer Harley's are much more reliable than older ones, but as evidence by your post - they still have their problems. And it's obvious that Harley needs to pick up the pace in correcting the issue.
