My son fed our Iguana lettuce yesterday, he didn't know he shouldn't feed iguana's lettuce. What will happen to iguana's if you feed them lettuce (will they die) and why are you not supposed to feed them with it?

Most of the 'bad veggies' (Iceberg lettuce, spinach, kale, cabbage, tomatoes, etc.) will not cause a problem if used once in a while.

The lack of nutrients in some (iodine in kale, for example) can be dealt with by a small shot of multi-vitamins, and an occasional bout of diarrhea is annoying but not a big deal- besides, some of the things that cause it (like tomatoes) offer other nutrients to make up fo it.

Some, like Iceberg lettuce, are just a little addictive- like chocolate for humans. Other dark green leafy lettuces are better for most reptiles- endive, escarole, dandelions, turnip greens, etc.

Melissa Kaplans Green Iguana Society site has the best vet recommended diet out there. Here is a link:

And no, it won't die from eating a little lettuce one time, but lettuce is useless as food for anything.

You're iguana will be fine, don't worry. One feeding of lettuce will not hurt your iguana, but if lettuce is offered on a regular basis your iguana will become ill (and possibly die) from lack of nutrition.

I'd highly recommend both you and your son (and every iguana owner) read "Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual" Written by James W. Hatfield III- http://www.amazon.com/Green-Iguana-Ultimate-Owners-Manual/dp/1883463505/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-8576022-3338432?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1193323658&sr=8-1

Light leafed (like ice burg) lettuces, is mostly water. Almost no nutrients to speak of. If he ate more than a very small amount he could get diarrhea. Just make sure he has plenty of water and keep an eye on him.

you should not feed your igunna iceberg lettuce.there is no nutritional value to it and if he gets hooked on it you are in trouble. your can give him romain lettuce, kidney beans some fruits and vegetables. stay away from tomatoes broccoli cauliflower. you can also buy canned food dry and wet food from your local pet sstore. definatly stay away from dog food. it will make him grow fast but it will make him aggresive and cut down his life expectancy greatly.
