I mean, as long as your GPA is between a 3.8-4.0 (not weighted), are you okay in that area?

To be qualified to get into an Ivy League school you need an unweighted GPA of 3.8+, a weighted GPA over 4.0, lots of AP and Honors classes, and SAT scores over 2200.

Being qualified is not enough. Harvard only accepts 8% of its applicants. If we assume that half are quialified (and I think it is more), then 84% of qualified applicants are rejected.

You need to do something to make yourself stand out. A lot of people think they can do that with extracurriculars. But they are easy to pad and hard to verify. Therefore, I think the determining factor is a combination of the interview and the admissions essay.

Yes, ivy league schools look at academics before anything. Not only do they want a high GPA, they also want high SAT/ACT scores and a good class rank. A 3.8 - 4.0 is a good GPA (unweighted), obviously. It looks much better if you are taking AP and honors classes, though, because then it is harder to get a 4.0.

Also keep in mind that plenty of colleges will change your GPA to match their grading scale. My school has 93 - 100 as an A (4.0), an 84 - 92 as a B (3.0), etc. Most have 90 - 100 as an A (4.0). To make it fair for comparison, colleges match it on their own scale.

Next, they look at how much you have done on the side. It is so much easier to do well in school if that is all you are doing, so make sure you have in and out of school activities, community service, etc.

Good luck!

GPA, SAT/ACT are a major consideration for most students.

Harvard, however, passed on 1,200 students this year with PERFECT SAT scores.

Most of them do make allowances for lesser students of merit, such as disenfranchised, disabled, homeschooled.

An Alaskan Girl from the Tundra with less than a 4.0 GPA and less than Perfect SAT could get into Harvard while at the same time they are rejecting PERFECT SAT scores from upper middle class white males.

The typical Ivy student from my HS has a 4.6-4.8 GPA (weighted) and a 33-36 ACT. Just something to compare yourself to.

They usually look for higher than a 4.0 and also consider SAT scores and extracurricular activities.
