there was a really great made for tv movie (may have been a miniseries) called "the 60's"
it had julia stiles, jerry O'Connell, leonard Roberts and a bunch of other good actors in it...

it followed a few families through the 60's covered "hippies", vietnam, civil right, woodstock, pretty much everything that happened in the 60's

here's the imdb link
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169528/

trust me this is exactly what you're looking for

"The Herlihys are a working class family from Chicago whose three children take wildly divergent paths: Brian joins the Marines right out of High School and goes to Vietnam, Michael becomes involved in the civil rights movement and after campaigning for Bobby Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy becomes involved in radical politics, and Katie gets pregnant, moves to San Francisco and joins a hippie commune. Meanwhile, the Taylors are an African-American family living in the deep South. When Willie Taylor, a minister and civil rights organizer, is shot to death, his son Emmet moves to the city and eventually joins the Black Panthers, serving as a bodyguard for Fred Hampton."

There was a great one on VH1.. it was about Sweetwater (called, oddly enough.. "Sweetwater")

It starred Amy Jo Johnson, who did an amazing job as the young lead singer that led Sweetwater to open Woodstock.. If you can find it .. it is a great movie.. but it is pretty hard to find and is not on DVD yet.

The song in this clip was from the movie.. Amy Jo Johnson sang one of Sweetwater's most memorable songs.. amazing job.. (ignore the Britney Spears melodrama in the video.. lol)
