My company got some fancy new software to monitor internet usage. How do they usually screen for people who are using the internet too much? Bandwidth used, forbidden sites visited, number of websites visited, time the internet explored is open, or what?

If you're not paid to surf the net, then you can stay out of trouble by actually working. The network is owned by the company you work for. You have no rights to privacy while using it.

The Barracuda web filter will tell the employer where anyone is going, how much bandwidth a person is using, the most visited web site, the most serious spyware attempt, etc.

And it can track this all in real time and print a report to hard copy and .pdf so the employer has the law on his side when it comes time to terminate the employee.

Get the Acceptable Usage Policy from your employer, it will be the definitive word as to what you can and cannot do. There are probably several people (perhaps yourself as well) who need the Internet to perform their job functions, so it's not likely that they just look for bandwidth numbers as these could just be a sign of a very diligent worker.

They likely log all the sites you go to and may scan for common sites (i.e You Tube, Facebook) that have nothing to do with your job.

Best play it safe if you need your job!

It depends.

If your scope of work is browsing the internet, logically you're out of trouble using the internet at work. But then you must only access the relevant sites.

However, if your work is not related to browsing the internet, then it's best not to use it during office hours.

The bottom line is: working hours are not for personal use.

Ask your boss if you're allowed to do personal surfing during you lunch break. If it's a go, be disciplined about it. It's a privilege to use the net at work. Abusing it is not worth losing your job.

Your on someone else's time and property. Assume their watching. Spend no more than a reasonable amount of time surfing- whatever you believe reasonable is. Stay away from sights that you think your employer has a right to object to. If their views differ from yours you'll know soon enough, at least you'll know that you acted according to your principals.

They probably monitor most of what you listed. But that's not your problem.

If you want to use the Internet responsibly at work, I would ask your employer what his guidelines are (preferably in writing) and adhere to it. This way, you won't get in deep crapola later.
