If the 'reputable' breeder was stuck up with a bad attitude, she probably wasn't reputable at all. Or maybe she was just asking questions about how your friend would raise his dog, and your friend didn't know the proper way to do so. The best place to get a dog is the shelter. True, they have many mixed breeds, but 25% of all shelter dogs are purebreds- just without their papers. You can ask your local shelter to contact you when a Samoyed or German shepherd mix come in. If you're set on a purebred, the easiest way to go is to a breed rescue. You also don't have to only look at adopting from your local pound. There are plenty of private organizations that are funded mainly on donations. You may have a better chance to find a Samoyed or german shepherd there. A reputable breeder- a REPUTABLE one that can be met at a dog show or through vets, groomers, etc- would be a phenomenal choice if you really want a young puppy. Shelters sometimes have puppies too, but you may have to wait a while until a litter of dogs of one of your chosen breeds come in. Then again, you'll have to wait for a litter of pups to be born from a reputable breeder, since just about all reputable breeders have long waiting lists. If you really want to show your dog and have a registered purebred, you'll have to go to a good breeder. Make sure the parents are at least OFA certified of a rank higher than 'fair.' This means that their hips are healthy. Also, pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills. So you may not think you're 'bothering with puppy mills,' but you are if you go to a store. Good luck, and please don't buy from a pet store!

Normally I would never say to buy from a pet store....but, Samy's and my eyes met across a display of milk bones and it was love at first sight. He is the cutest little black poodle in the world. When I took him outside, right after I had purchased him, he couldn't stand up and walk more then a few steps because his legs had never been exercised. He was 4 months old when I bought him and it breaks my heart to think that he was in a cage that small for all 4 months,

I have two chickens, who are retired from a battery farm, one of my cats came from a woman i used to work with, the first owner brought her back when her boyfriend didn't like her... the second cat i got from a guy I met in a chat room, his ex wife gave him the mother cat and told him it was sterilized... it wasn't! My dog is from a free to good home ad in the newspaper, she was rescued by the people I got her from when she was no good at hunting wild pigs.... she had been horribly abused, but after extensive obedience training she is a wonderful pet, and an accredited animal companion... she does pert therapy work in nursing homes and hospitals.

We adopt!
for cats and dogs I need no "designer tag" on MINE, and am glad to have saved the lives of these precious animals.
My cat was an abandoned, sickly kitten THREE HOURS from being euthanized. she replaced the cat I had lost at the age of 18, ALSO an adoption
The dog is a terrier/beagle mix, and the most adoring kid a parent could ever want.

My beautiful Napoleon literally just walked into my life. Back in 2003 he was just wandering around and came to me as I stepped out of my car. I was running into the market and couldn't help but pet him cause he was just such a gorgeous boxer/lab breed. I told him to sit by my car and when I came back out 15 minutes later, he was still there!! I took him home with me and after no luck in finding his owner, I adopted him. My best friend.
